Part III — Infrastructure Alignment

Chapter 40

Marketing Automation

"Automation is solving the problem once and then putting it on autopilot." — Michael Hyatt

I worked with a non-profit SaaS service that licensed its platform to users in 22 countries at a starting price of $15,000 for the first year. What made the service remarkable was not the product — it was the sales process. From the moment a prospect expressed interest, they entered a fully automated funnel. Not a single phone call was made until a purchase was imminent.

Did it work? Each year, more than 2,000 prospects entered the funnel. Over 120 ultimately purchased the service. The entire operation was run by one part-time employee. The economics of that model — driven entirely by automation — are difficult to replicate without it.

Whatever marketing method you adopt for your SaaS service, automation is not optional — it is the lever that makes your efforts scalable. Upgrades, free trial management, limited account expirations, renewal sequences, upsell campaigns — all of these should be supported by the platform itself, not managed manually.

Roadmap Considerations

◆ Define clear marketing goals and segment your target audience before building any automation workflows. ◆ Select a CRM with a robust, well-documented API that supports the automation layers you plan to build. ◆ Choose automation tools that integrate natively with your CRM and your SaaS platform. ◆ Test automated campaigns before launching them at scale. A broken automation can be more damaging than no automation. ◆ Monitor campaign performance continuously and optimize based on actual conversion data.
